TLE
Course Curriculum
The Learning Exchange's
courses reflect a highly academic, classical education placed upon a solidly
Biblical foundation. We provide award winning curriculum for each core
subject.
Foreign Language:
The Learning
Exchange teaches Latin as its first language due to its versatile applicability as both a foundation
for multiple foreign languages, and English vocabulary and grammar. Students
not yet ready to study Latin or students entering TLE in the midst of
a semester are instructed in English grammar
and syntax. This English course will also cover: speed reading, study skills, test taking, SAT practice.
As a second language we offer courses in Spanish courses. Here the emphasis is to teach the students to speak or write in the language, for what good is it to learn a living language if you cannot use it. Additional fees apply for these courses.

Math:
The Learning
Exchange can accommodate all necessary math courses. We are using Math Relief/Keyboard
Enterprises for Algebra I and II and MathUSee for the remaining. Each year students will be given a choice of learning one of two courses or be a Teaching Assistant to one. We will offer additional course alternatives as independent study to qualified students. We are offering: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, and College Algebra.

Science:
Our science curriculum of choice is Apologia. We rotate between Physical Science, Chemistry, and Biology. All courses include lab work. We try to integrate the youngest in the course but when that is not feasible, like when we teach Biology, we will teach them reading and study skills.
In addition we offer to qualified students Physics and Human Body/Anatomy/Health on an independent study basis with tutoring.

Social Studies:
This course use the most highly endorsed curriculum of its kind: The Life in America series. The students are taken on a journey through the times, giving them a solid understanding of the people and events that created history. The steps go beyond just history, but it is a truly social studies curriculum, integrating history, geography, English, practical art, bible, and science. This is the hour and a half where all TLE students get together exchanging ideas and work in teams. Ellen uses various techniques
to engage students in the material including brainstorming and discussion,
multi-media presentations, small group assignments, games, and student
presentations to take the students from curiosity to mastery.
We cover two time periods each school year.

Teaching Assistant:
High school students with maturity, and mastering a certain subject matter and who show aptitude to teach can work with us as Teaching Assistants. This is the ultimate way to get a deep understanding of the subject matter while gaining a perspective on how others learn and are motivate. The TAs are getting individual coaching from us in their subject matter. The training also include a general leadership training. Apart from getting deductions of their tuition they also gain valuable high school credits for their work.
Teacher and coach: John and Ellen Ahlberg, parents and third parties.
Writer's Workshop:
At TLE there
is a strong emphasis on speaking and writing skills. We also prepare students
for college by investigating classic literature. Students work in small
groups with their writing assignments as well as get individualized coaching
to perfect skills including spelling/vocabulary and incorporating in the
writing and structuring of a play. High school students are required every year to complete six different writing assignment. One very popular assignment is the annual project to create their own play. The script outline will be ready in the fall and for those interested and pass the audition test (most interested do) they will be part of the annual fund-raiser dinner play at the end of the school year.
Teachers: Mary Bianco and Ellen Ahlberg
Classic literature
The evidence are overwhelming - students who read get a higher SAT and will have an academic advantage when leaving school. We like that. So we require our students to read classic literature - goal is one book a month. This is done individually and they are required hand in chapter summaries and book report that are graded and discussed with each student.
